QUETTA: In an effort to reconcile with annoyed leaders of Balochistan, the provincial government on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of 89 cases
against various nationalist leaders, including Brahamdagh Bugti, Sardar Akhtar Mengal and Jamil Bugti.

Official sources said Chief Minister Aslam Raisani directed the authorities concerned to comply with the directives issued by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza
Gilani during his speech in the National Assembly, where he said all politically-motivated cases against Baloch leaders would be withdrawn. The
government has also agreed to withdraw cases against Brahamdagh Bugti, chief of the Balochistan Republican Party (BRP), which Islamabad accuses of
having taken shelter in Afghanistan and operating with the alleged support of India.

The government has decided to withdraw cases against Dr Allah Nazir, former chairman of the Baloch Students Organisation (BSO), who is believed to be
the mastermind of the Baloch armed resistance in the Awaran area.

Rejection: But several Baloch leaders rejected the government’s initiative, calling it a cosmetic effort.

Earlier promises: Habib Jalib Baloch, secretary general of the Balochistan National Party (BNP) told Daily Times that a similar promise of withdrawing cases
was earlier made by Chief Minister Raisani when he took office, but the cases still persisted. Baloch Bar Association President Sadiq Raisani, cases
against whom were also withdrawn, said he felt proud.

Shahzaib Baloch, president of BSO Quetta, rejected the government’s decision, saying their steadfastness had finally compelled the government to take the
cases back.
