removal’: Zardari

LASBELA: President Asif Ali Zardari said on Friday that espousal of the rights of Balochistan by him had angered “certain elements” and they were now
out to remove him.
“The Aghaz Huqooq-i-Balochistan package is the right of people of Balochistan and we have to implement it. But they do not want this to happen.
Therefore, they want to remove me,” the president said while addressing a gathering at the ground-breaking ceremony of Winder Dam.
He said he would save Pakistan by defeating such elements. “If we save Pakistan, it will amount to saving the rights of poor people.”
He stressed the importance of masses’ support in national affairs and said even armies could not save countries without the support of people.
The president said those who had criticised his frequent visits to China should know that he wanted to acquire Chinese help and technology for the
development of the agriculture sector, dams and water reservoirs.
President Zardari said the government would launch thousands of development projects, including dams and oil and gas wells.
“We have to build thousands of more dams. However, these dams will be owned by local people,” he said.
The president said that even before becoming the head of state he had offered an apology to the people of Balochistan for injustices meted out to them
in the past because he considered it his duty. “I am a president with a political thinking.”
He said the government would utilise all resources for the welfare and well-being of poor people who had voted it into power. Highlighting the
government’s achievements on the economic and other fronts, he said they had been achieved despite global recession and the war against terrorism.
“It is my promise that as long as we are alive, the PPP will continue to serve the masses with the vision of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir
Bhutto,” he said.
President Zardari also distributed ownership certificates of agricultural land among poor women. He said he had held over two dozen meetings about
the Winder Dam project so that poor people of the area could get land.
“We will take satellite images of the site and make payment to the contractor on the basis of the progress of work,” he added. The dam will be built
across the Winder River about 125kms from Lasbela town.
The storage capacity of the dam, to be completed in three years, will be 36,484 acre-feet of water and it will irrigate 20,000 acres of land and generate
300kw of electricity.—APP
