Gold, copper reserves worth $65 billion found in
Balochistan

By Indo Asian News Service

Islamabad, April 14 (DPA) Major reserves of copper and gold have been discovered in the restive southwestern
Pakistan province of Balochistan, a media report said Friday. The English newspaper Dawn quoted a senior
government official as saying they represented the largest reserves yet discovered in Pakistan.

'This is a major discovery by all international standards made by Pakistani experts in Rekodiq town,' the official
said. Rekodiq is about 550 km west of the provincial capital Quetta.

The area is estimated to have reserves of two billion tonnes of copper and 20 million ounces of gold, which at
current market price are worth about $65 billion.

The new discovery came in the wake of a renewed insurgency in mineral-rich Balochistan following the
government's announcement last December to explore new reserves of oil and gas in Kohlu district, some 500
km east of Quetta.

Baloch nationalists accuse the federal government of exploiting resources in their province without passing on
the benefits to local residents.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has repeatedly held the tribal chieftains responsible for the unrest in
Balochistan and ruled out any talks with them unless they give up arms.

The new discovery in the sparsely populated province will contribute about $1.25 billion annually to the national
economy, when by 2010 some 200,000 tonnes of copper and 400,000 ounces of gold will be mined every year,
said the official.
