JWPLeader Goes Missing again

KARACHI: One of the victims of enforced disappearances, Saleem Baloch, Senior Vice President of Jamhori Watan
Party (JWP), who had recently been released, was picked up near his residence again on Thursday.

Saleem had narrated an account of his ordeal at a press conference organised by the Human Rights Commission
of Pakistan (HRCP) on December 20 — eleven days after which he was kidnapped from Lyari. The kidnappers
included dozens of personnel of law enforcing agencies, as stated by eyewitnesses.

According to Ejaz Ahsan of HRCP, Saleem was returning from a mosque in his neighbourhood after saying his Fajr
prayers when three cars stopped by and forced him inside. One of them was a police mobile and, as per
information received by the HRCP, the colour and model of one of the cars of the kidnappers was the same as the
one used to kidnap Saleem last time.

In a statement issued to the press on Wednesday, the HRCP said they have a reason to believe that Saleem
Baloch was targeted again as he had spoken about his illegal detention, torture and interrogation.

Seeking immediate release of the detainee in a letter addressed to the federal interior minister, HRCP’s Secretary
General, Iqbal Haider and Vice Chairperson, Zohra Yusuf expressed great concern about the victim’s security and
strongly believed that his life is in grave risk.

They have strongly urged the Minister to take prompt action and issue orders to the concerned authorities to
release Saleem Baloch unconditionally.

Initially, Saleem Baloch was picked up and disappeared on March 10 from Lyari by the police and other law
enforcing agencies.

Since then, his whereabouts remained unknown until he was recovered on December 16, after a period of nine
months.
