On Balochistan's independence
The matter of Balochistan’s independence took place in a sequence of the
following dates:
- On 11 August, 1947, the British acceded to the independence of Balochistan
The Khan declared the
independence of Balochistan and Jinnah signed the
proclamation of Balochistan's sovereignty under the Khan of Kalat
On August 12, 1947
- The New York Times reported: "Under the agreement,
Pakistan recognizes Kalat as an independent
sovereign state with a status
different from that of the Indian States."
- The next day the Times printed a map of Kalat as an independent state
However, according to the Indian
Independence Act 1947, all treaties and
agreements between the British Government and the rulers of States,
terminated as of August 15, 1947.
- As such, on August 15, 1947, one day
after the creation of Pakistan, the Khan addressed a large gathering in
Kalat and declared formally the full independence of Balochistan. So, it
was on August 15, 1947, that after the lapse of British paramountcy over
princely states, that Balochistan emerged as a full independence country on
the map of the world.
- On the 15th of August, 1947, the Khan issued a
Firman, or Royal Charter, declaring the State fully independent
from all
foreign powers and made the 15th of August a day of celebration.
- Soon after
the declaration of independence, the Khan formed lower and upper houses of
Kalat Assembly.
- In the first meeting of the Lower House, in early
September, 1947, the Assembly confirmed the independence
of Kalat
.
- By April 1, 1948, the Pakistan Army occupied Kalat and Balochistan had lost her independence of almost 300
years. The first army operation of Pakistani forces in Balochsitan took place on April 15, 1948, and almost all members of the Kalat Assembly were either in prisons or under house arrests. It was
on this day that a never ending series of arrests, imprisonments, tortures,
and intimidations began which goes on with more ferocity and brutality with
the passing of the time.
