Balochistan Liberation Army declared terrorist organization
ISLAMABAD, April 9, (SANA): The federal government on Sunday declared Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) as
a terrorist organization, the interior ministry said.
This is the first nationalist group to be declared as terrorist. In the past the government has declared several
religious extremist groups as terrorist outfits.
BLA is an amorphous, underground organization which was born in the Balochistan University during the cold
war era.
Extremists, left-leaning students of the Baloch Students Organization (BSO) were its most important component.
However, when in Islamabad last week, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs
Richard Boucher said Washington had not put BLA on terrorist list.
Anti-government Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti welcomed Boucher's statement about the BLA.
Later talking to a private television channel Federal Minister for Interior, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said
Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) was involved in anti-state activities and action will be taken against its
masterminds.
“Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) was under close watch and its activities were being monitored”.
“The government has received such evidences, which showed BLA’s involvement in anti-state and terrorist
activities”, he added. Responding to a question he said government is aware of BLA’s offices and action will be
taken against them.
